Unfortunately, Christian Fischer and Jeff Petry’s “heavy” collision overshadowed the most recent Detroit Red Wings defeat.
The Detroit Red Wings suffered a double blow in addition to their Saturday night 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Not only did they lose, but after colliding with one another, defenseman Jeff Petry and forward Christian Fischer both suffered injuries that prevented them from returning to the game. It goes without saying that everyone concerned found the situation to be “alarming.”
The Red Wings forward and defensemen crashed with each other in the second period. Both were visibly shaken, but finally managed to return to the bench to the team changing room; the other was unable to do so.
It was a really troubling situation, head coach Derek Lalonde said, noting that he had not received an update on the status of either player.
“It was concerning,” Lalonde remarked. “You’re worried about the two players at first. And it’s clear that they both received assistance in getting off the rink.
You obviously don’t like seeing it. The play was really horrible. It was a horrible collision there; I was simply playing hard.
After being acquired by General Manager Steve Yzerman over the summer, both players are currently in their rookie campaigns with the Red Wings. Additionally, Lalonde stated that each player had a “upper body” injury, though she did not elaborate.
In summary, the next man up
The Red Wings’ demanding schedule is much-neededly relieved by the Christmas break, since they have recently been beset by a slew of injuries. It’s an opportunity for the team to rest and possibly restore the health of a few important players, offering a much-needed break in the middle of their demanding schedule.
The next game that Detroit plays is an away game against the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. Following that, they’ll play two games on home ice at Little Caesars Arena, which is a familiar venue.
