This time, as Christmas approaches, the Gunners are ahead of champions Manchester City for the second season in a row, having already managed what they failed to do last season when they beat the Citizens.
Given how tight the position at the top is, the January transfer window could decide everything. It could provide Arsenal with an extra firepower in the form of a special striker who has had an excellent campaign so far.
Arsenal are probably aware that last season under Arteta was no fluke, so they splashed the cash in the summer to further improve a Spanish club that has seen the arrivals of Declan Rice, David Raya, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber, with the former particularly impressive at the Emirates. Now the north Londoners could repeat the transfer trick and add more goals to their squad in the winter window.
According to the Daily Star, Arteta could look to sign Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke in January if the Gunners fail to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford. The Emirates outfit are said to be keen on the former Liverpool player, who has also attracted interest from West Ham United.
Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also interested in Toney, so Solanke could be a great alternative for Arsenal, who are looking for another goalscorer for the lead. Solanke, who has produced excellent results for Bournemouth in the Premier League this season, could get his big transfer opportunity now that the winter window is about to open.
The “perfect” Solanke could surprise in the title race:
When Solanke left Liverpool permanently in 2019, it was uncertain whether he would return to Bournemouth. But almost five years on, it’s clear the striker has always had plenty of talent. Current Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is certainly a big fan, having heaped words of praise on the Chelsea academy graduate:
“I think he’s really perfect. He helps us without the ball, he can go with the ball, he’s good technically. He can play well with his feet, he uses his body well, and if they leave space behind him, he can exploit it. He had his chances, he scored, he hit the post, I think he was really dangerous and he helped his teammates a lot, so I’m very happy for him.”
Solanke’s stats, compared to Gabriel Jesus’ numbers this season, show that he could be the goalscoring striker that Arsenal so badly crave. The Bournemouth star has scored nine goals in all competitions, eight of them in the Premier League. But Jesus has scored just three of his seven goals in all competitions in the English Championship this season, proving that Solanke could bring extra firepower to north London.
